Un mag de la llum i dels colors -A wizard of light and colours

[Catalan & English versions]

Joaquim Mir (1873 – 1940)

Joaquim Mir i Trinxet was a Catalan Post-Impressionist painter at the same level as Sisley, Monet or Van Gogh, and as much as anyone of them, a true magician of light and of colours. He was born in Barcelona, and painted the most abundant and innovative portion of his work in the Camp de Tarragona and the island of Mallorca. He died also in Barcelona, after being imprisoned by the Franco regime for his support to the legitimate Republic.

His most personal style represents a clear overcome of Impressionist painting, out of his extremely free and passionate view of the landscape -through spots and masses of colour that synthesize the actual appearance, often bordering abstraction.

Like Vincent Van Gogh, Mir suffered from mental ailments, and in 1903, when he was thirty years old, he spent some time under treatment at the ‘Pere Mata’ Psychiatric Institute in Reus.

I’m posting here a very scanty selection of his work, just 4 paintings (aside of the one at the heading)… Anyway, Mir frequented the artistic circle of “Els Quatre Gats” (‘The Four Cats’) and thus this number has seemed to me adequate and sufficient to give an idea of Mir’s wonderful work to anyone who does not already know it.

My late sister, Ari, posted a few of Mir’s paintings on G+ some months ago (19th April), and from her fondness of them all, I’ve written this entry here. You may see a beautiful oil not included in my post, on her public wall:   https://plus.google.com/+AriFontrodona/posts/DwwA6HiFZYr
